Black, gospel and related styles for the beginner and the experienced singer, with Tony Backhouse, international singer, arranger and choir director.
Tony works with the passionate and exciting African-American repertoire, focusing on spirituals, gospel songs old and new, choral and quartet styles, and embracing South African church songs, and often doo-wop, R&B and pop. The emphasis is on harmony, collective improvisation and freedom of expression. No music-reading skills are required, and you may record the sessions.
‘One minute we were a circle of strangers all staring at each other. Ten minutes later we were a throng of joyful singers revelling in some of the most glorious harmony singing of my life. What Tony offers is stunning.’ – Clare Grayson
