In this course, we will explore the influence of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Harry T. Burleigh on generations of composers in the genre of the American and British art song  With each song, we will explore stylistic interpretation, diction, poetry and historic context of the song.  Composers included: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Harry T. Burleigh, Margaret Bonds, Florence Price, Hall Johnson, Adolphus Hailstork, Errollyn Wallen, et al.

Each participant will prepare two art songs and a spiritual.   A list of anthologies and suggested repertoire is available on request.  There may be a final recital for friends, family, and friends of Jackdaws.
