Location: EarthSpirit Centre, near Glastonbury, Somerton
Run by: Ali Burns
Delighted to be hosting this very special event at the wonderful (award winning) Earth Spirit Centre. The singing space is a beautiful long barn with oak timbers and stone walls. The feeling is medieval, but with modern comforts such as under-floor heating and a large woodstove. The high roof and skylights create a light, airy atmosphere and a great acoustic for singing.
The food is high quality vegetarian: fresh and home cooked. The centre also has lovely rooms to relax in; a meditation room; and a hot-tub.
Earth Spirit is situated just five miles from Glastonbury, on the edge of Compton Dundon village in Somerset, EarthSpirit lies within the ‘temenos’ (sacred enclosure) of Avalon.
The beautiful landscape lies between two nature reserves; and just two minutes walk from St Andrew’s church, which has within its cemetery a yew tree of 1,800 years old. The seventeenth century farm buildings have been restored and specially converted for use as a venue. They are set within seven acres of fields and gardens.
This team of Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, Kate Howard and Ali Burns have been working together almost every year since 2002 and bring a huge weight of knowledge and skill to their teaching. Peter Amidon is renowned in the USA and increasingly the UK for his stunning choral arrangements for secular, interfaith and church choirs and works alongside Mary Alice to teach his material. They share a background in Americana: shape-note, gospel, spirituals, contemporary folk and are consummate teachers and performers. Kate Howard is a great curator of unusual music from different world traditions and brings not only her huge repertoire of warm-ups but knowledge of vocal technique needed for singing various world music. Ali Burns has been composing for the community choir sector since the early 1990s and has written many songs that have become favourites in the repertoire of choirs across the UK and USA.
