This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Indian raga singing in beautiful rural West Bengal over 2 weeks from 26th January to 11th February 2019.
Suekali is a long time member of NVN and has been working with internationally renowned Rajeswar Bhattacharya for over 20 years to enable westerners to access Indian raga singing.
During this workshop, we will sing every morning and early evening, learning to sing from the heart, from a place of profound relaxation, letting our whole body resonate with sound, increasing the range and fluidity of our voices. This approach to singing has arisen from deep listening to the vibrations in nature and the universe, so we are able to experience the bliss of finding ourselves in tune with the vibration all around us. We have students from a range of differing singing styles – classical, jazz, folk – who find Rajeswar and Suekali’s workshops invaluable.
The temperature in Bengal at this time of year is usually like a warm balmy summer’s day – temperatures in the early 20s. It is also a perfect way to experience India for the first time – you are picked up from the airport and given a very safe and nurturing non-touristy experience of rural India, tribal villages, temples, local Indian hospitality, delicious traditional Bengal food – a real experience of the heart of Bengal. Non-singing partners are also very welcome as there are lovely areas to explore and enjoy.
The workshop runs from January 26th (arrival in Kolkata) to February 11th, with an optional holiday extension in the forest area of north Bengal – near the border of Bhutan, which will include a visit to Bhutan, plus some more informal singing opportunities. We will return on 17th February. All welcome – no prior experience needed.
