Every year singers from all directions converge at the top of the Pennines to sing together – singers from Settle Voices and Silsden Singers in the east, Lakeland Voices from the west, Penrith community choir singers and the Dent Folk Carols festival from the north, and Bentham Voices from the south. Singers from beyond are also more than welcome to join the singing.
Our songs are drawn from well known pub carols and folk carols and secular songs of the season. These songs are more likely to be heard in pubs and folk clubs than in churches.
The tradition of singing inside Ribblehead Station comes from a time when deep snow made it difficult for the vicar to reach the church at Chapel-le-Dale so he held his Christmas carol services in the station. We have adapted this tradition to suit the cultures of 21st century community choirs.
After singing in the station we go to sing in the Station Inn, a few hundred yards down the track from the station – and enjoy a meal together.
I can send booklets of words and scores if these help. The event is more about joining in than just listening. Although there are many chorus songs like the Boar’s Head carol and Gaudete, it is usually best if you already know the songs!
Lakeland Voice does workshops teaching folk carols with harmonies which you are welcome to attend – details on our website.
