I am very excited to announce my first Singing on the Wild Side holiday here in The Song House / Teach na nAmhrán.

The Song House/ Teach na nAmhrán

After running singing holidays in wild places successfully for many years, the chance came my way to put down roots and establish a centre in Donegal for singing and other activities which fit with the guiding principles of community, harmony and valuing the natural world.

Formerly known as the Poets’ House, the centre was well-known in literary circles, with Seamus Heaney a frequent visitor. Now in its new incarnation as The Song House, I am delighted that the creative spirit of the house will be maintained.

Why Donegal? In short, the landscape, the people, the music. The landscape here on the Wild Atlantic Way is quite stunning, constantly changing in response to shifts in the light: miles of empty sandy beaches as well as the iconic mountains of Errigal and Muckish as a backdrop to every view. All bedrooms in the Song House as well as the spacious singing room look out onto Muckish mountain, arising majestically from the sweeping boglands. Falcarragh lies within the Gaeltacht, the Irish speaking areas of Ireland. So you are likely to hear Irish being spoken by many local residents.

Singing on the Wild Side

Our intention this week is to build together a community that connects us, through the singing, to each other and to the dramatic landscapes surrounding us. We will sing every morning together. The afternoons will be free time to explore the local seashores and countryside. In the evening we will share a delicious home-cooked meal, share songs, tell stories, play music and join in playful games. We will invite local residents to join us in song and to share with us traditional and modern Irish music.

This August will be a little different…

I have collaborated with Lindsey Williams, to create a collection of songs for choirs, and we would like to share them with you. This week will be an opportunity to learn many new songs, as well as returning to old favourites and discovering new favourites. We will be sharing the cooking between us, and this is reflected in the price.

Here is ‘Sounding It Out’ singing Tolpuddle Six, the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs:

I look forward to welcoming old friends and new to the Song House in August. As spaces are limited, please book early.
