Further information:

This full day workshop is aimed at those people who would like to hone or develop their skills and confidence at singing acapella harmony in a small group. You may already sing in a small group and want to come together but you are equally welcome to come on your own and you will be put into groups. You may have existing material you want to work on but Jenny will also come with some sample songs to try.
The workshop will look at:
  • The process of singing in a small group and how to develop confidence in that
  • Tuning and blend
  • Working at creating an authentic sound to suit the song – how to use the voice appropriately and different vocal qualities
  • Performance – how to present yourself and engage with the audience.

We will warm up the voices and then the workshop will be practical and experiential. You will sing in front of others and receive feedback from Jenny and observe others at work (you can often learn as much from listening and observing as from doing). The aim is to provide a safe environment with constructive feedback.

You need to feel reasonably confident about singing in small groups and holding your part and you need to be prepared to work hard, focus and be challenged. A chance to develop your skills in small group harmony singing in a safe environment.
About Jenny: Jenny has been running choirs and leading acapella harmony singing workshops for over 25 years across the country and internationally. In addition to open access community choirs she also runs performing acapella groups – her current performing group is Far Cry, based in Huddersfield. She has been performing herself since she can remember – initially within the classical tradition but since the 1980’s within the world music/acapella/ folk traditions. She currently performs with roots/acoustic band Jenny and the Good Men and acapella duo The Blameless Hussies. Prior to that she performed with acapella trio Tyranny of Voice, acapella quartet Far Flung Voices and Afro-Cuban band Big Bad Bata. She also occasionally performs solo. Jenny originally trained with Frankie Armstrong and has since gone on to participate in workshops and courses with many of the leading exponents of acapella singing including Sweet Honey in the Rock and Mahdia Daulne of Zap Mama plus voice and performance courses at Central School of Speech and Drama and Leeds College of Music. She studied as a postgraduate at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Jenny continues to work on her own voice with internationally renowned teacher Mark Maylan. Jenny is a founder member of The Natural Voice Practitioners Network and is committed to their approach of developing free, confident voice use rooted in the body.
Jenny will work in this workshop without written music for songs she may teach but groups are welcome to work from written music (although Jenny may challenge you to put the paper aside and trust your ears and your connection with each other!)
To book please contact Jenny on or 07984 584923. Prior booking is absolutely essential as places strictly limited to 20.
