This will be an evening of harmony singing together that will instil peace and wonder. Harmony singing has a long tradition in both sacred and secular settings, and is both lovely to listen to and deeply moving to sing. The songs we sing are from a variety of traditions, some sacred, some with a focus on the beauty of nature and on healing our fragile planet, and some that sing of our shared humanity. All who wish to join us are welcome, and we make no assumptions about spirituality, faith journey or world view.
We will start with a gentle body and voice warm-up before teaching the first song. Singers can try different parts to find the part that is comfortable for them. All songs will be taught by ear, slowly, using simple hand movements as a guide to the notes. We don’t use music, and no previous musical or singing experience is assumed. There will be four leaders, one for each part, so no-one is on their own.
We will sing three or four short songs in four-part harmony, letting each one settle into its own rhythm as we sing round the song over and over. There is something about singing in this way that opens us up to receiving healing and grace, and the silence that follows this kind of deep harmony singing is dazzling in its intensity and possibility.
Booking is not required, and we don’t charge a fixed fee to attend the evening, but we do have to pay for the room, so we welcome donations to cover this cost. (We suggest £5 per person if possible.) Any extra money received will be donated to City of Sanctuary Sheffield, which works with refugees and asylum seekers.
