Community choirs and singing for wellbeing with an inclusive approach
I have been running community choirs and ‘singing for wellbeing groups’ for the past 10 years. My musical training is drawn from the Kodaly approach, where singing is at the very heart of music. This mirrors the core principles of the Natural Voice Network: that the voice is the primary instrument, that singing is a way to bind communities together and that everyone deserves a chance to sing. My aim for every session is to share the joy of singing with a supportive group – and to bring a smile to people’s faces by the time they leave.
My background as a teacher, specialising in SEN, has given me an inclusive approach, where I hope all will feel warmly welcomed, individual talents nurtured and adaptations put in place to cater for specific needs, wherever possible.
For over 20 years I have also been co-leader of a small ladies’ choir, who enjoy unaccompanied harmony singing for their own pleasure and for performance. This has given me the opportunity to develop skills in composing, notating and arranging for voices.
A Cappella is a small ladies’ choir, which has been running in various forms for over 20 years. We sing a wide range of music, set for unaccompanied voices (usually SSA or SAT) to create a satisfying blend of harmony. We don’t audition but do expect our members to be able to sing tunefully and hold their part with practice, as we like to perform at community events, weddings and other local celebrations.
Sundays 7.45 - 9.15 pm
The D’Vine Singers is a Wellbeing Choir with a focus on mental health. We started out as part of a research study into ‘singing and mental wellbeing’ and now run independently, with grant funding, so there’s no fee to join. We sing a wide range of simple part songs, including folk traditions from Britain and around the world, designed to lift the spirits or touch the soul. Above all, we aim to create an atmosphere of fellowship and fun which comes from singing in a supportive group. Although we work on songs from week to week, our sessions are intended as a drop-in so people just turn up when they can. Everyone is welcome and you don’t need experience of singing in a choir or ability to read music. We just hope you will leave feeling fulfilled and with a smile on your face.
D'Vine Singers meet Fridays 12.00-1.30 pm in term time
