Political (socialist), solidarity (Palestine), wellbeing (dementia, general health)
Singing and songwriting have been my twin passions for as long as I can remember. I have been leading choirs since 1997 when I started Quirky Choir in Doncaster. I also lead two political choirs – Sheffield Socialist Choir and Tadhamon, a women’s choir, also based in Sheffield, that sings in solidarity with the people of Palestine, and a community choir in the town where I live, Retford Community Singers. Singing is also a part of my wonderful day job at darts, Doncaster Community Arts, where I am involved with Singing for Memory, our group for people living with dementia and their carers, and Breathe and Connect, for adults with Long Covid and similar long term health conditions. I also love writing songs with people of all ages and abilities.
Quirky Choir prides itself on being a very different kind of choir. It has a distinct identity and pushes the boundaries of what a choir “should” be. Nobody needs to audition to join, and every week Doncaster residents of all ages and walks of life come together to make some joyful noise!
The choir sings an eclectic repertoire, mainly a cappella. They also occasionally compose their own songs and collaborate with professional songwriters, composers and poets to create pieces that are distinctly Quirky.
