Community Singing for Well-being; Companion Voices
Singing has become fundamental to my wellbeing since a repetitive strain injury 6 years ago prevented me from playing the piano, viola or drum, which had until then been my musical release. I have since trained with the British Kodály Academy and love how the Kodály concept of music education helps build firm and lasting musical foundations. Using solfa handsigns is one way I introduce new songs, linking kinesthetic and visual learning with the aural tradition.
I love singing with others and experiencing the power of the something other that is born from community in this way.
Alongside NVN colleagues (who are my mentors) I co-lead occasional sessions with the charity Music In Our Bones. With another friend, I co-lead a church choir which meets weekly throughout the year.
I also lead monthly Community Sings in our local Care Home and we are setting up an East Suffolk branch of Companion Voices: singing for the end of life.
