Carol Shortis

Carol has been involved in singing for the last 30 years, in choirs and as a soloist. In 2008 she became assistant director of Wellington Community Choir, learning the craft of song leading alongside Julian Raphael. Nowadays, she directs a number of natural voice choirs in Wellington and on the Kāpiti Coast. Her latest project is The Whakaahuru Singers: a group that has been formed specifically to sing at the bedside of palliative care patients. She also presents workshops in world music and community singing, and facilitates workshops for song leaders visiting from other parts of the country, or from overseas.

She studied at the New Zealand School of Music, graduating with an MMus in composition in 2010. During this time Carol composed a number of original works for choir, and developed a passion for arranging songs from around the world. She is particularly drawn to English folk and Celtic-language music.

In 2012, Carol co-founded the Song Leaders’ Network Aotearoa, with Julian Raphael and is currently the treasurer of that organisation.

More information about her compositions and arrangements is available from SOUNZ, The Centre for New Zealand Music.
