Becky Graber wrote this song about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Here are the words:
“So often the things that we regard as an impediment turn out to be great, good fortune.
You can disagree without being disagreeable.
Best tune out when a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken.
Keep hold of your umbrella in a rainstorm.”
The last part to come in, about the umbrella, are my words, and refer to her statement in her dissent in Shelby County v. Holder, where she says regional protections of the Voting Rights Act are still necessary. She wrote, “throwing out pre clearance when it has worked and is continuing to work to stop discriminatory changes is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet.”
