This German Christmas Carol dates back to the 17th/18th century. It’s praising the evergreen fir tree, the “Tannenbaum” which in time became known as the Christmas Tree.
The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas at all. Instead, they refer to the fir’s evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness. In an earlier version the word “grün-green” was replaced by “treu-faithful”. The song has more verses but I’m only using the first verse here.
You might know the tune already, as “the song of the red flag” shares the same melody.
